I’M READY NOW

From:Mio Morales
Hello+Happy 2020!

Hey…If you’ve ever been frustrated with your progress as an Alexander teacher/entrepreneur, I know just how you feel…I have truly been there!

Given the value of what we have to offer, people should be busting down doors to book lessons and then be absolutely delighted to spread the word to all their friends, family and co-workers.

Now that might just seem like a pipe-dream to you, but lately I’m beginning to think that that could actually happen.

For almost a decade I’ve been researching the potential of a completely hands-free approach to teaching the Alexander Technique.

In the process I’ve discovered some things that are proving to be of tremendous value not only to HandsFree teachers but to Alexander teachers in general.

These simple yet powerful ways of working quickly enhance the hard-won teaching skills you already possess while providing you with new tools that will deepen your teaching & greatly expand your reach.

Starting next month I will begin sharing them in the 1st in a series advanced training opportunities anyone interested in increasing their flexibility as teachers and broadening their influence as professionals.

So…If you’ve been feeling a little bit stuck of late and are interested in checking out new ways to increase your flexibility as a teacher and broaden your influence as a professional.

Please Come Join Us Next Month In…

The Club

TheCoachingClub™ (TCC)  is a “Q&A” style masterclass perfect for any Alexander teacher who would like to refine their skills, add new tools to their repertoire or increase their ability to reach more students.

The research I’ve been doing into the viability of a totally HandsFree  approach to Alexander teaching has yielded some very powerful methods & strategies that have proven valuable to teachers irrespective of style.

These ways of working harken back to the original methods Alexander created to solve his vocal problems, make his discoveries & to teach himself and others. They are informed & inspired by “Evolution of a Technique” in  The Use of the Self.

They are procedures that leverage observation and experimentation as the chief engines of change. They build confidence, self-reliance and as a result accelerate the progress of both students and teachers.

The Curriculum

TheCoachingClub is all about problem solving. The class is super practical because it always centers around the specific challenges that members are facing day after day in their teaching.

I’ve been coaching and training Alexander teachers for over 35 years, and I draw upon that experience to create a challenging but collegial atmosphere that is both serious and light-hearted. Intense at times, but always supportive & accepting.

The Club is a community learning lab. A collaborative space online where A.T. teachers from across the globe can gather each week to share questions and find answers together.

As the “Learner-In-Chief” I lead the charge, but so much of the magic is in what happens colleague to colleague, peer-to-peer. The knowledge shared in the Club and our shared experience just might take you back to the wonderful workshops you’ve gone to  over the years and the very best days of your teacher training.

A Different Kind of Direction

1. Primal Alexander™

Over the past decade or so, I’ve been developing an unconventional approach to applying Alexander’s discoveries and teaching the Technique. One that does not require hands-on kinesthetic guidance.

The full teaching system is called Primal Alexander™: A comprehensive set of techniques, skills, activities and explorations originally designed to teach beginning students how “think in activity” by helping them see the relationship between how they are choosing to think and the quality of the way they end up moving.

In the last four years, however, what’s been especially exciting is seeing just how valuable this approach is proving to be for Alexander teachers, especially with regard to skill refinement, teaching groups, sharpening observation and proactive self-care.

2. Questions as Direction

The aspect of the system that makes this learning  possible for both Alexander students and Alexander teachers is an awareness process I call 3EasyQuestions™. Here’s basically how it works:

After inhibiting, in the gap between stimulus and response, in lieu of traditional orders or directing, you quickly assess:

This gentle but conscious curiosity about the ease you are experiencing in the moment shifts your attention in a way that circumvents your usual habit patterns.  This facilitates the Primary Control which effortlessly reorganizes your movement as you are moving allowing you to do anything you’re doing with a lot more ease.

“Anyone can do what I do,
if they will do what I did.”

3. Re:Evolution of a Technique

I remember reading that quote for the first time as young, slightly fanatical Alexander enthusiast and feeling like  he was challenging me to the Technique more seriously.

Did I aspire to being able to do what Alexander could do…yes, I did! Was I willing to sit in front of mirrors for years to achieve what he did…Apparently not, because I never did.

However, as the years went by, I came to realize that spending all that time in front of the mirrors was not what Alexander did as much as it was how he did what he did…Which was to:

Experiment!

Alexander started with a problem that he was motivated to solve. When no one could solve it for him, he experimented on himself with different ideas until the problem was solved.

The exact same process that greatly empowers new students in their kinesthetic re-education and cuts the time it takes for them to apply A.T. to the challenges they face every single  day in their lives…

As an Alexander teacher, when you learn that process, you will take possession of a tool that could

Successfully create self-experiments that give you real time, objective information about the quality of your thinking and movement choices, while at the same time greatly, quickly  and automatically improving your Us

The fact is that the quality of the way we use ourselves is a continuum. It varies constantly according to activity, focus, emotional state and many other factors. In a general sense, moment to moment we are either becoming more efficient or less efficient.

Granted, the degree of facilitation is small compared to what a skilled Alexander teacher can do with their hands for a student. The same holds true for the student’s experience of the change which can be pretty subtle in the beginning. But, from the very first lesson, it lays the groundwork for students understanding how to work on themselves.

Our bad Use is an unconscious but learned response to stimulus that overrides our inborn movement intelligence. Through constant repetition, we habituate to how that interference feels until it becomes linked up to a sense of control and safety that we are usually very reluctant to relinquish.

3. A Graduated System of Study

Think of the Alexander teachers that have helped you the most. The ones you most admired. Do you feel like you’re on the road to becoming as skilled as they? If you are on that road, how quickly are you actually progressing?  Now, imagine yourself  moving down it so much faster…

When I first encountered the following quote, I always took it as a challenge…

“Anyone can do what I did, but they would have to have done what I did and none of you want anything mental. None of you want the discipline.”

I did want to be able to do as Alexander did. I wanted to have that kind of self-mastery and the ability to use his principles to improve other people’s lives the way my life had improved.

But what exactly did Alexander do? What did he mean by “mental”? What kind of discipline was he referring to?  Was he just talking about sitting in front of mirrors for hours every day for years?

Sticking to principle.

5. New Frontiers

ver the past 7 years, I’ve developed a way to teach A.T. that does not require hands-on kinesthetic guidance. It’s based on the simple idea that good coordination is as natural to human beings as it is to animals (we just happen to have a big brain that can really get in the way).

Our bad Use is an unconscious but learned response to stimulus that overrides our inborn movement intelligence. Through constant repetition, we habituate to how that interference feels until it becomes linked up to a sense of control and safety that we are usually very reluctant to relinquish.

Alexander created an alternative operating system for our big biocomputer that leveraged its ability to make choices about what to think about & what to pay attention to. By consciously creating a gap between intention and action, he became free to choose how to respond & thus was able to unlearn whatever wasn’t working.

Primal Alexander

A Little History

I had always been fascinated by the fact that Alexander had solved his vocal problems and made his discoveries without having received hands-on guidance.

I also suspected that the very power of hands-on could actually steepen the learning curve for students by drawing out the time it takes for them to master consistently being able to improve their Use on their own.

So, after a workshop in Japan, when a group of students expressed an interest in learning more about my approach to teaching, I jumped at the chance to see if it was really possible to teach as effectively without hands-on as with hands-on

The Challenge

I knew at the outset if I were to have any chance of succeeding I was going to have to at least find a way to:

  • Provide them with experiences of moving without their habitual tension
  • Teach “Forward and Up” without them turning it into a position
  • Help them develop a more reliable sensory appreciation
  • Maintain momentum so they stay interested long enough to really benefit.
  • Give them a functional understanding of Non-doing, End-gaining and Inhibition.

Stop doing what you know to be wrong. The right will come of itself. It is natural to be right, but not habitual, so let nature do it for you. As you progress you will be able more and more to stop doing the wrong things.

I need to input some compelling ideas

Here’s an important question if you’d like to further deepen your understanding of Alexander’s discoveries AND if you still haven’t quite “cracked the code” of marketing yourself as an Alexander Technique teacher…

You don’t have to give up Hands on to benefit from this…

Get rid of the things you didn’t know you were doing. Things you didn’t know you didn’t need.

Generally, there’s been an ongoing assumption in the Alexander community that lessons need to include both verbal and hands-on instruction in order to be effective.

It’s an understandable assumption given that this is the manner in which we all originally learned the Technique as well as it being the way we were trained to teach.

But that assumption belies the fact that Alexander himself solved his vocal problems and made his amazing discoveries without the benefit of external kinesthetic guidance

We know full well that in today’s distracted, unfocused, instant-gratification-seeking, totally overwhelmed, end-gaining world…

Our Alexander Technique is virtually invisible to the public at large despite having been around for more than a century…

The thing that REALLY gets to me is that despite the amazing uptick in people’s general awareness of the need for self-care and the near obsession people seem to have with modalities like Pilates, Yoga, Mindfulness(to paraphrase Sir Rodney of Dangerfield)…

“WE DON’T GET NO RESPECT!”

Most people know nothing about what we do, despite the fact that we could be helping them improve the way they do whatever they’re choosing to do to improve themselves…Now
